Aguinaldo To Hit The
Streets On December 8
December 8 is an
important day in Costa
Rica. It is not a
holiday, nor a day to
commemorate an important
historic moment, but the
day when the government
"aguinaldo" hits the
streets.
The aguinaldo or
Christmas bonus, the
equivalent of one
month's salary is paid
to all public and
private employees in
December.
The government usually
pays the aguinaldo in
the first half of the
month, while private
employers have until the
third week in December
to pay the aguinaldo,
though many do so by the
middle of the month or
close to the government
announced payday.
On December 8, 482.000
public employees will
receive ˘159 billion
colones.
José Luis Araya,
viceministed of Egresos
del Ministerio de
Hacienda said that the
money will be deposited
directly into the bank
accounts of all
government employees
during the day of the
8th.
The aguinaldo is
calculated on the
accumulated salary paid
to an employee between
November 1, 2007 and
October 31, 2008 and
equal to one month's
salary or partial if the
employee has worked less
than the full 12 months
of the calculation
period. |
