Helicopter Crash In
Panama Leaves 12 Dead,
One Survivor
A helicopter crashed
into a commercial
building at about 2 p.m.
local time Thursday in
Panama City, killing 12
people and leaving only
one survivor, the
Panamanian Interior and
Justice Ministry said
Thursday.
Jose Alejandro Bernales,
director general of the
Police (Carabineros) of
Chile, who was on board
the helicopter, was
killed in the accident.
The only survivor is a
Panamanian who is
currently at Santo Tomas
Hospital in Panama City.
Bernales, 59, was in
Panama for an official
visit to attend a
seminar of the
Panamanian National
Police when the tragedy
happened.
Chilean national TV said
earlier that three crew
members and eight
passengers were
traveling in the
helicopter. The cause of
the accident is still
unknown.
