Salud To Get Tough on Polluters
The Ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) said it has its eyes on a number of hotles in the Atlantic, Central Pacific and Chorotega for not complying with the treatment of wastewater where they are located.

María Luisa Ávila Agüero, ministra de Salud, said that there is already a complaint field against the Hotel Sámara Beach in the regional health office to determine if the hotel is in fact contaminating the environment due to a problem with the treatment plant.

The minister added that her officials will also focus on Jacó where tests will be run to identify possible polluters in the area and apply the respective legal actions to correct any problems detected.

"The situation is simple and consists of applying the health laws and regulatgions. If people know that they cannot build within the Zona Marítimo Terrestre (ZMT) - maritime zone - they shouldn't. I cannot believe that an investor putting out us$1 million dollars does not know to that it has to invest us$200.000 in a good treatment plant. It doesn't make sense", said Avila.

The minister is clear that municipalities must strictly enforce their development plans and to maintain the maritime zone limits and protect the local rivers.
