Teachers and Taxis Drivers on Strike Today
The strike action called by the Asociación de Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza (APSE) - teachers union - is not the only work stoppage today, as a group of taxi drivers will take to the streets today on foot instead of their cabs.

A group of drivers of the Unión de Taxistas Costarricenses (UTC)will march onto Casa Presidencial to ask Costa Rica president, Oscar Arias, to pressure the Procuraduría General de la República (PGR) - Comptroller's office - to allow taxi plates to be inherited.

Currently, the taxi plate dies with the owner, as the Tribunal Administrativo de Transporte orders the cancellation of the taxi plate concession on the death of the owner of the concession.

Rubén Vargas, president of the UTC, added that not only are the families left out in the cold when the bread winner dies, the family will also have to pay the tax on the exonerated vehicle used as a taxi when it sold.

Legislator, Mario Quirós, promised to intervene on behalf of the taxi drivers.

As to the teachers, the APSE has called an indefinite strike over problems with the teachers salaries.

The Ministro de Educación Pública, Leonardo Ganier, said the all schools will be open today notwithstanding the strike action.
