Thursday and Friday Are The Only Legal Holidays
Thursday and Friday are legal holidays in Costa Rica and employees who are required to work will have to be paid double pay and cannot be part of their holiday days nor can an employer force an employee to work on those days.

According to Eric Briones Briones, head of the legal department at Ministerio de Trabajo, both the employee and employer must be in mutual agreement with working hours of Thursday and Friday, save in exceptional cases where the services of the employee are fundamental to the business. Briones did not explain what constitutes a fundamental service.

Saturday and Sunday are not legal holidays in Costa Rica.

Briones added that in the private sector no employer can demand and employee to work on Thurday and Friday, saying that following the holidays the Labour ministry always receives a large amount of complaints from employees who were obligated to work on the legal holidays.
