Semana Santa Exodus
Begins
The exodus to the beach,
resorts and Nicaragua is
on as Semana Santa gets
underway and vacationers
leave the city,
overloading the bus
system and highways.
The bus terminals were
completely jammed
yesterday as thousands
waited patiently in line
to get on the bus and
begin their holiday.
Although many businesses
and government offices
and agencies do not
close for the holidays
until Wednesday, bus
operators say the exodus
for many different
destinations began on
Friday, when they
started to see the lines
get longer and longer.
However, the real rush
won't occur until
Tuesday and then follow
on Wednesday.
Authorities believe that
as many as 1 million
people will leave the
Central Valley for the
holiday, some hitting
the beaches, others the
mountain resorts, while
others are heading north
to Nicaragua to spend
the holidays with family
and friends.
The bus terminals, "Coca
Cola" the stop most
buses headed west and
north and the "Caribeños"
that is house to all
buses to Limón, are two
of the busiest
terminals.
At the Coca Cola buses
come and go from places
like Jacó, Quepos, all
points to Guanacaste and
many of the other points
in between, like Atenas,
Grecia and San Carlos.
The bus terminals
operated by Transnica
and Ticabus with
destinations to
Nicaragua reported heavy
traffic and are bracing
for the bulk of the
travellers on Wednesday
and then returning on
Sunday and Monday.
Buses to Nicaragua have
begun leaving every 20
minutes, taking the
thousands of Nicaraguans
living and working in
Costa Rica to their home
towns in Nicaragua.
All bus operators have
said to increase their
hours of operations and
added more buses on all
routes. |
