Ecuador Demands OAS Act
on Colombia
After meeting with his
Brazilian peer Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva
Wednesday, visiting
Ecuadorean President
Rafael Correa demanded a
quick reaction from the
Organization of American
States regarding
violation of his
country's sovereignty by
Colombia.
Correa said he hoped a
committee proposed by
Brazil can be installed
as soon as possible to
investigate the
Colombian military
incursion that led to a
massacre of guerrillas
in Ecuador.
We demand a swift stance
by OAS to ratify the
inviolability of
national territories and
sovereign countries,
according to its
founding charter, and to
form the committee to
verify the incidents and
confirm the aggression
we were subject to, said
Correa.
He reiterated his
condemnation of the
Colombian government for
attacking neighboring
countries where there
might be opponents it
calls terrorists, and
recalled that if this
logic of President
Alvaro Uribe prevails,
then all countries have
the right and freedom to
bomb Colombian soil.
Correa also reiterated
his appreciation of the
direct stance of the
Brazilian government in
condemning, from the
very first moment, the
Colombian military
attack against a
neighbor territory.
He said this is a time
for Latin American unity
and he relies on
international support.
However, he reaffirmed
the Ecuadorean people's
readiness to defend
their country's
sovereignty at all
costs.
We count on the
international community,
but above all on our own
strength, our dignity,
our pride, and we will
not allow any insult
from a government which
has lost all sense of
shame and betrayed the
principles of
international law,
stressed Correa.
