El Salvadorīs FMLN Seeks Integration
The presidential candidate for El Salvadorīs Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN), Mauricio Funes, announced that if he wins the 2009 elections, he would boost international relations.

Funes boasted of having an integrationist vocation and noted the need to diversify international relations.

El FMLN candidate said he expects to maintain a respectful relationship with the United States and hopes for a reciprocal attitude from Washington.

He recalled that last December he met in Washington with US Undersecretary of State for Latin America Tom Shannon, whom he asked for avoiding statements that might affect the Salvadoran election process as it had happened before.

Funes explained that the answer Shannon gave was that "there would be no declaration by the United States government that could be taken as interference in El Salvadorīs internal affairs."

If elected, Funes would hold a symbolic act to ask for forgiveness for all the victims of the 1980-1992 civil war in El Salvador, where it left 75,000 dead, 12 thousand handicapped and eight thousand disappeared.

"The victims of the conflict and families of victims demand moral and material reparation," he emphasized.

The opposition candidate stressed that an act of apology is a demand that the FMLN has made repeatedly.

He went on to explain that dollarization is a measure under discussion in the party and announced FMLN would maintain the dollarization, but with complementary measures.

Funes and his running partner, former guerrilla comandante Salvador Sanchez, lead all voting intention polls.

Salvadorans will vote for legislators and mayors on January 18, 2009 and for president and vice president on March 15.
