Raul Castro: US Worsens
World Food Crisis
Cuban President Raul
Castro said on Saturday
that the international
food situation is very
serious, and the United
States worsens it with
its policy to promote
biofuels.
The Cuban president gave
the keynote speech at
the main event on the
55th anniversary of the
attacks on the Moncada
barracks and the Carlos
Manuel de Cespedes
garrison, led by Fidel
Castro and which marked
the beginning of Cubans'
armed struggle against
the Fulgencio Batista
dictatorship.
Referring to the food
crisis affecting the
planet, Raul Castro
recalled that it has an
impact on all nations
and the Third World
peoples in a
particularly dramatic
way.
He pointed out that, in
addition to being an
economic crisis, it is
linked to climate change
and the irrational use
of energy.
Raul Castro went on to
say that strong calls of
alert have been made by
international bodies
such as the United
Nations Food and
Agricultural
Organization (FAO),
whose general director
bravely denounced the
seriousness of a
situation of
unpredictable
consequences.
In the light of this,
the rulers of rich
countries and big
transnational companies
have taken a passive
attitude, not only in a
selfish and
irresponsible way, but
also in a suicidal
manner, because we all
live in this tiny
planet, he stressed.
Raul Castro added that
the president of the
World Bank, an
organization that no one
would describe as
opposed to capitalism,
only found deaf ears to
its proposal to assist
the UN food program with
the ridiculous amount of
