Authorities Promise A
Safe "Romeria"
In two weeks the "romeria"
- the annual pilgrimage
to Cartago - begins and
authorities are
promising a tough hand
to ensure the safety of
"romeros" and little to
no traffic congestion
around the Basilica de
los Angeles.
The municipality of
Cartago has installed a
series of closed circuit
television cameras on
the main streets of the
"viejo Metropolis",
which will be monitored
by the Ministerio de
Seguridad Pública.
Rolando Rodríguez, mayor
of Cartago, said that,
in addition to the
cameras, some 1.000
police officials will on
hand around the Basilica
and main roads to
Cartago used by the
romeros.
This year, authorities
have banned sales along
the route from the old
Tránsito station house
to the Basilica, save
for a number of food
vendors who will be
licensed to operate in
Tres Rios, which will be
monitored by health
officials.
Joining the police are
the Cruz Roja (Red
Cross) and firefighters
to provide first aid to
romeros.
