Hondurans to Go on
Strike
Social organizations
from Honduras have
announced a Nationwide
Civic Strike for August
5 in defense of citizens
rights and the
environment.
Marches, rallies,
assemblies and
roadblocks will take
place throughout the
country on August 5 to
force the government
comply with a 12-item
list of demands.
Demands include the
derogation of the 2003
Framework Act on
Drinkable Water and
Basic Sanitation, which
allows the
municipalities to manage
water services and grant
their administration to
private companies.
According to the
Community Communication
Association (COMUN),
other demands are the
approval of new Agrarian
Reform and Mining acts
based on the people's
proposals, and the
derogation of the
Agricultural
Modernization Act.
Strikers will also
demand the suspension of
the construction of dams
as long as no projects
based on the protection
of the environment and
the sovereignty of the
State are designed, and
respect for the free
association of workers
and the rights of
indigenous and black
peoples.
According to strike
organizers, nearly
100,000 people from
trade unions, farmers
and teachers
organizations, and
religious groups, among
others, will participate
in the August 5 strike. |
