Chavez Encourages
Betancourt To Work For
Humanitarian Agreement
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez said
Wednesday that he held a
telephone conversation
with Ingrid Betancourt,
encouraging her to
continue to work for a
humanitarian agreement.
French-Colombian
Betancourt was freed
recently after spending
over six years in
captivity with the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC).
"I talked to Ingrid and
wished her long life and
happiness, and we sent
this message of peace to
Colombia because we are
children of the same
native land, children of
Bolivar and of liberty,"
Chavez said when
presiding over a
graduation ceremony of
the Aviation School in
Maracay.
During the conversation,
Chavez praised
Betancourt as an
"intelligent and brave
woman."
"We will count on her to
continue the
humanitarian agreement,
the liberation of all
the people deprived from
their freedom and the
establishment of the
peace dialogues," Chavez
said.
Chavez will meet with
Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe on Friday
in the state of Falcon,
in a bid to ease the
tension caused by their
difference on the issue
of guerrilla groups.
