Guatemalan Congress
Decries EU Directive
The Guatemalan Congress
rejected the so-called
EU Return Directive,
which criminalizes
immigration, violating
the human rights of
illegal immigrants.
In a resolution approved
by majority in a special
session on Thursday,
they denounced the EU
double standard policy
as it defends individual
prerogatives, on the one
hand, while pursuing
illegal immigrants, on
the other hand.
"The EU countries have
not made much progress
so far in handling the
immigration phenomenon,
nor have they made any
effort in opening to
regular immigration,"
the text approved by
Guatemalan legislators
says.
The document requests
the UN to intercede with
those countries for a
revision of the measure,
considered unfair and
against universal human
rights principles.
At least 25,000-30,000
Central American
illegals living in
Europe might be expelled
in the Return Directive
comes into force. |
