America Forum for Food
Autonomy
The need to achieve food
sovereignty to face the
current hike in prices
of basic grains and fuel
will center the America
Social Forum to take
place October 7-12 in
Guatemala.
The event will be held
at the historic
University of San
Carlos, and between
15,000 and 20,000
representatives of
indigenous communities
and social organizations
from the entire
continent are expected
to attend.
"The analysis of the
excessive rise in the
prices of the most
consumed products such
as corn and wheat will
be one of the most
important topics," the
member of the organizing
committee, Juan Tiney,
told Prensa Latina.
Participants will also
discuss alternatives to
increase local
production to avoid
depending on
international markets.
The irrational
exploitation of natural
resources by mining
transnationals, which
poses a threat for the
life of indigenous
peoples, will be in the
center of attention as
well.
