Cuban Journalists Defend their Revolution
Tubal Paez, president of the Cuban Union of Journalists(UPEC) stated on Friday that defending the Cuban Revolution is the only guarantee to improve the entire country and the world.

In the Main Report to the 8th UPEC Congress, Tubal Paez pointed out that Cuban journalists should show the defense of the Cuban Revolution to the new generations of Cubans as an attractive and possible choice, not as a referential showcase, or a memory told by the elders.

The UPEC president pointed out that Cuban press is the freest press in the world because its contents are not controlled or dictated by the market or by any entrepreneur or advertising guideline.

“Cuban press is not a transnational, it is not subordinated to the interests of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, or any embassy; it’s not controlled by any mafia, paramilitary organization, drug-trafficker, and does not share the profits of sexual trade or corruption,” he stated.

“Cuban press has fulfilled and continues fulfilling the honest role of making its messages coincide with the interests of the people in the most beautiful, profound way, knowing that our professional prestige is at stake,” he added.

He referred that the new technologies, training and information policy should remain the center of the immediate and future attention of the organization.

Involvement, either collectively or individually, in the making, implementation, control and assessment of the information policy, is the basis of the professional performance of Cuban journalists, because assigned tasks can never be assumed without the conviction of their usefulness and objectives, he said.

On formation and training, he said the press cannot play its role without optimizing professionalism of journalists.

As for the new technologies, Páez recalled that in 1999, when the 7th Congress was held, only 15 press media had a presence in the Internet, while today they are 133, with a growth being spreading up to radio stations and municipal telecenters.

After the reading of the main report, delegates discussed the text, based on three essential aspects.

The UPEC 8th Congress is in session at the Havana Convention Center with the attendance of 185 of the 189 direct delegates, and will conclude Saturday with the approval of the main report and the Action Plan of the organization for 2008-2013.
