International Experts To Monitor Costa Rica's Volcanic Activity
The Volcán Arenal and Volcán Turrialba are under the watchful eyes of international experts who want to discover its secrets. The experts believe that the Costa Rican volcanoes hold the secret to volcano eruption prediction, a task that has so far proved impossible.

The international experts intend to study the behaviour of the active volcanoes who will hand over thier findings to Costa Rican volconologists.

Haraldur Sigurdsson, an expert in volcano activity assures that there is a way of predicting eruptions and using the knowledge gathered by geologists and volconologists, studying volcano behaviour over a number of years and mapping its distribution and eruption deposits, a history of the volcano can be determined.

The interest in Costa Rica's volcanoes is due to the recent activity both the Arenal and Turrialba has displayed. The experts also to keep an eye on the Poás, which is located between the Arenal and Turrialba.

At a recent talk held at the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), the experts assured that the risk to the population near volcanoes is high, citing the concern of the residents near the Turrialba.

The other concern is the number of tourists who decide to visit the volcano who are placing themselves in dangers way.

Given the recent activity, the monitoring of the Arenal and Turrialba is now permanent.

Dr. Sigurdsson added that the Arenal is a special case due to its constant activity. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Arenal's biggest eruptions recorded by the colossus. The town of La Fortuna is expected to hold a commemoration ceremony.
