Honduras Urged to Speed
Petrocaribe Pact
Honduran Human Rights
National Commissioner
Ramon Custodio suggested
to the Honduran
government Tuesday that
it speedup negotiations
with Petrocaribe, under
the auspices of
Venezuela.
Custodio considers that
the agreement should
have been signed two
years ago, when Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya
Rosales was elected, and
stated that the most
important thing is to
give a response to the
Honduran people in terms
of energy, as
Petrocaribe is offering.
Yesterday Honduras
signed an agreement with
Petrocaribe to allow
this Central American
country to import the
total fuel needed by
local energy generation
enterprises, which
produce 70 percent of
the country's electric
power.
It also includes
purchase of 30 percent
of the gasoline and
domestic gas.
According to the
agreement, 40 percent of
the bill will be paid in
25 years, with 24 months
grace period and an
interest rate of 1
percent.
With the credit of 345
million dollars derived
from the acquisition of
fuel oil in two years,
Tegucigalpa plans to
build small reservoirs,
develop a state electric
power generating
enterprise and grant
agricultural loans. |
