Ruling Salvador Party to Pick Candidate
ARENA, Republican Nationalist Alliance that has been in power in El Salvador for 18 years, has started the process to choose its presidential candidate for the March 2009 elections.

Hopefuls include Vice President of the Republic Ana Vilma Escobar, who already accepted established rules for ARENA's internal elections.

In the opinion of ARENA Deputy President Cesar Funes, one of the most significant changes in the selection mechanism will prevent people selected from exploiting his/her public post.

Officials who enter internal elections are required to resign their posts and any kind of publicity from that position is banned, recalled La Prensa Grafica daily.

This requirement will offer equal opportunities to competitors, preventing use of State resources for campaigns, according to members of ARENA's National Electoral Council.
