Buenos Aires Gets Baked
At three o´clock Tuesday
afternoon, the
Argentinean capital felt
baked in a real furnace
when thermometers rose
to 42 degrees
Centigrade, a record for
the southern hemisphere
summer.
The air became
unbreathable, people
concentrated in the
shadowy side of the
street, where it became
difficult to walk while
the sunny side was
completely empty.
The few birds that flew
out from the trees did
so only to reach the
fountains, abundant in
this beautiful city, to
dive without any ado
into the water,
abstaining from any
chirping or singing
effort in this hellish
condition.
Trees did not move
either, not one leave,
as if they froze into a
landscape painting.
Men, women and children
-partly on vacations-
chose to be clothed
lightly, sandals without
socks and the classic
bottle of water in hand
to be frequently used as
if it were an oxygen
mask without which they
could not survive.
The ardent day was
similar both for the
Federal Capital and
great Buenos Aires, said
the National
Meteorological Service (SMN):
the temperature this
afternoon was 37 degrees
centigrade and could
reach 39, while the
sensation of heat
exceeded 42.
Specialists in these
issues, above all
doctors, recommend to
drink lots of water even
if one is not thirsty,
to eat fresh foods and
stay away from fast
foods for the harm they
could inflict under such
high temperatures.
The habit of eating
hamburgers and similar
foods are usually
considered light, but
they can lead to serious
complications -even
death- in case of
suffering the Hemolytic
Uremic Syndrome, hardly
noticeable in such
circumstances. |
