Thieves Turning to Rural
Areas For House
Break-Ins
Figures realeased by the
Instituto Nacional de
Seguros (INS) - state
monopoly on insurance -
show that thieves have
moved to rural areas to
commit their crimes, as
areas like Garabito de
Puntarenas and Pococí de
Limón are showing an
increase in the number
of break-ins.
The INS report says that
the tough police action
on criminal groups
centering their
activities in upper
scale neighbourhoods
like Rohrmoser and
Escazú and a crack down
on crimes in
Desamparados has forced
the criminals to look at
rural area to commit
their deeds.
In addition to Garabito
and Pococí, other rural
areas being affected by
crime is Nicoya in
Guanacaste and the
Pacific and Caribbean
coastal towns.
According to the INS, in
the last two years, half
of all house robberies
were reported in rural
areas, as criminals
concentrate more on
businesses in urban
areas.
The INS says that during
the last 13 months it
paid out ˘48 million
colones to 79 home
owners who were victims
of break ins, while
paying out ˘238 million
colones in compensation
to 115 commercial
enterprises. |
