Sunday Without  Cellular Phone Service
Come this Sunday, beginning at 12 midnight and until 6:00am, 2 million cellular service subscribers - all cellular phones - will not have any service.

The complete shutdown of cellular service is to allow the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) - state monopoly on telecommunications - to run tests on its network as it gears up change over from a seven digit to an eight digit number system.

Costa Rica. at the stroke of midnight March 20, will move from the current seven digit number to an eight digit system. The move is to allow for more lines - both fixed and cellular - to keep up with the demand.

On March 20, all fixed line phones will have a 2 added at the beginning of the number, while all cellular numbers will have an 8 added to the beginning of the number.

For example, the fixed line number 231-3205 becomes 2231-3205 and cellular number 399-9642 becomes 8399-9642.

The 2008 telephone directories - both white and yellow pages - that was distributed earlier this month already includes the eight digit number system.
