Honduran Police Alerts on Reptile Smuggling
Honduran police seized 21 reptiles in danger of extinction when they were about to be smuggled into El Salvador, where they are sought after for its meat, official sources reported Saturday.

The iguanas, a genus of lizard native to tropical areas of Central and South America and the Caribbean, were hidden in a briefcase, and were on the verge of suffocation.

The Police statement, disclosed by local media, said the smugglers hunted the reptiles in the region of Monjaras, and were taken to the border town of Amatillo, where they were about to be sold to Salvadorians.

According to police data, hundreds of Hondurans are involved in the high-profit criminal enterprise.

The reptiles have been declared in danger of extinction for its indiscriminate hunting.

Last week 13 iguanas were also seized by Police officers, who said the seized reptiles will be transferred to the Biological Station Zacate Grande, to be medically treated and later released.
