Bolivia Foils Attempt To
Assassinate President
La Paz - The Bolivian
government said in a
statement on Monday that
it has foiled a plot by
rightist extremists in
the country to
assassinate President
Evo Morales.
According to information
obtained by Bolivia's
national intelligence
agency several weeks
ago, the extremists
intended to carry out
the assassination at a
public rally in Pare
region of Cochabamba
province, Interior
Minister Alfredo Rada
told local press.
The authorities have
strengthened protection
for the president and
begun investigation into
the case, Rada added.
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez said Sunday
that Morales had
informed him by phone of
the assassination
attempt.
Chavez said the Bolivian
opposition was seeking
the assassination "out
of despair for a
success" in both the
upcoming general
elections and
referendum.
