Nicaragua Nears Literacy

Nicaragua is nearing its
2009 illiteracy-free
target, noted Reynaldo
Mairena, Director
General of the Education
Ministry Department for
Literacy and Education
of Youngsters and
Adults.
Once the goal is
achieved, the Central
American country will
become the fourth member
of the Bolivarian
Alternative for the
Americas (ALBA) to be
declared illiteracy-free
after Cuba, Venezuela
and Bolivia.
The country boasts a
7.22-percent illiteracy
rate, a record low,
thanks to the
implementation of the
National "From Marti to
Fidel" Literacy
Campaign, as well as
other initiatives using
the Cuban method Yo Si
Puedo (Yes, I Can),
noted Mairena.
The target to wipe out
illiteracy by July 19
2009, to mark the 30th
anniversary of the
Sandinista Popular
Revolution, is near, as
that requested by the UN
Educational, Scientific
and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) is
below five percent.
The plan is to declare
illiteracy-free all the
country's departments by
late July, according to
Education Minister
Miguel De Castilla.
