The Avenidazo Is Back!
The traditional avenidazo is back and begins on Monday and people can again use confetti, according to San Jose mayor, Johnny Araya, following a request by merchants for the municipality to rethink the ban.

The avenidazo is the throwing of confetti on the boulevards of the downtown core on Avenida Central, but this year the tradition could take root on the newly built boulevard on Avenida 4.

The Ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) has suspended the sale of confetti for the last several years due to the aggressiveness of some people in throwing the confetti and complaints by those getting hit.

Mayor Araya said that the behaviour of some and the ensuing complaints forced Salud to ban the sale and the municipality to ban the tradition.

Starting Monday and until December 24, the evenings on Avenida Central will be filled with lights and music every day and if the municipality can find the financing it will be extended to Avenida 4.
