Following A Break In The
Weather, Limón Is Under
Water Again
The weekend brought
needed sunshine and
break in the rain in the
Caribbean province,
especially in Matina and
Sixaola. However,
another cold front once
again brought rain and
more devastation to an
area that is suffering
from the worst of the
last 40 years.
The rain was so intense
yesterday in the city of
Limón and problems with
the storm drain system
had the port city
literally under water
for hours.
The cold front is
expected to last until
the end of the week
according to the
Instituto Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN) -
national weather service
- followed by another
cold front, with
expected to affect the
entire country.
In the Central Valley,
winds of up to 70 km/hr
are expected that will
bring with it scattered
showers and cold night
temperatures of between
14 and 16 Celsius.
In the past two weeks
more than 45.000 people
have been affected by
the rains in the
Caribbean province, of
which some 5.000 had to
be sheltered.
In the areas of Sixaola,
near the Panama border,
entire communities were
left stranded as rivers
breached their banks and
flooding the area. In
Panama up to 10 people
were reported killed by
the floods.
The Comisión Nacional de
Emergencia (CNE) and the
Cruz Roja Costarricense
have been working at
full capacity to bring
aid to the most
affected.
However, there was
nothing that anyone
could do except to wait
out the water to recede
while yesterday's
downpour on downtown
Limón and the failure of
the sewer system had the
entire port city under
water.
