Central America to
Debate in Honduras
Crisis Impact
Tegucigalpa -
Central American
Presidents will evaluate
the impact of the
current global crisis on
the region and other
related issues on
December 5 in Honduras.
Representatives of the
Central American
Integration System (SICA)
member states will thus
comply with accords
taken at the
extraordinary summit of
the entity held on
October 4 in this
capital.
On that occasion, the
presidents analyzed for
the first time the
probable effects of the
crisis and instructed
their ministers to
elaborate a report with
forecasts for the zone,
said radio station RHN.
“We want to know the
impact to prevent it, to
be prepared,” stressed
the deputy Foreign
Minister Patricia Licona
who advanced that this
month´s meeting will
probably be held in the
northern city of San
Pedro Sula.
During the meeting in
that city, main
commercial and
industrial center of
Honduras, this country´s
president Manuel Zelaya,
will deliver the
Presidency pro-tempore
of SICA to another
member nation.
The financial crisis
originated in the United
States, which has
expanded to the resto f
the world, generates an
environment of
uncertainty in the
region which still
cannot view the
magnitude of its impact,
assured specialists of
the Central American
Economic Integration
Secretariat.
However, it is already
certain that remittances
will fall –from 14.18
billion dollars in 2007-
and the construction
industry, because many
emigrants send money to
build houses for their
families and will see
their income reduced.
Central America will
also see its exports to
the United States
reduced and will
register a descent in
foreign investment and
employment, according to
a SIECA report. |
