Venezuela: Indigenous
Parliament Greets Law
Package
CARACAS - Jose Poyo,
president of the
Venezuelan Group of the
Indigenous Parliament of
America (GV-PIA)
highlighted Thursday the
importance of the
package of laws approved
by the local Executive,
which he said will
always govern for the
benefit of the people.
These are 26
legislations, which
needed to be certified
because they all go for
the benefit of the
popular masses, said
Poyo in a press round
Thursday.
However, he highlighted
the importance of a
reform proposal enacted
in 2007 for the current
Indigenous Communities
and Peoples Organic Law
in force for three years
now, by request of the
Public Ministry.
A GV-PIA communiqué
agreed to exhort the
National Assembly to
generate a debate in
which the rights of the
indigenous peoples and
regulations for
ecological preservation
are established as a
general principle.
The declaration urged
the National Executive
to strengthen the
necessary actions, among
its institutions and
authorities to eradicate
mining and forest
exploitation, especially
in the basin of the
Caura River, Venezuelan
state of Bolivar.
Other spokesmen from
native communities
called to reinforce
bilingual education,
sanitary assistance,
land delivery and
protection of monuments,
architectures and
indigenous designs.
The Indigenous
Parliament also said
that supports Bolivian
President Evo Morales in
relation with the
convoking of the
revoking referendum of
August 10.
GV-PIA rejected the
media campaigns from
elements of the Bolivian
opposition to discredit
democratic mechanisms in
Bolivia.
According to recent
censuses there are
350,000 indigenous
people though extra
official sources
calculate the real
number goes up to a
million people.
