Nicaraguan Workers
Propose Minimum Wage
Raise
MANAGUA - Nicaragua's
National Workers' Front
(FNT) repeated its
proposal for a
53-percent increase of
the minimum wage to the
entrepreneurial sector
and the government.
FNT Secretary Gustavo
Porras said talks would
be resumed to set the
amount of the pay raise
to cover the family
shopping basket of 53
products.
Official statistics show
that the price of the
shopping basket to meet
the needs of a
six-member family is 433
dollars. However, the
guild noted that
according to a survey
among workers, the real
cost is nearly 515
dollars.
In statements to
reporters, Porras, who
is also a deputy for the
Sandinista National
Liberation Front at the
National Parliament,
called on businesspeople
to present a serious
proposal that can
benefit all workers on
Thursday.
We know that this demand
cannot be met
immediately, but our
idea is to recover the
lost purchasing power
based on the latest
minimum wage set six
months ago.
