Petrocaribe Receives
Central America Support
Central American
organization Via
Campesina expressed its
support to PETROCARIBE
initiative to foster
agricultural production
for food in the area,
with a fund supplied by
Venezuela.
Small and medium
producers and farmers
and indigenous
organizations from
Guatemala, Belize, El
Salvador, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica,
and Panama recognized
the importance of the
meeting of Central
American Agriculture
Ministers, held in
Honduras Wednesday.
In the document
published on the
Internet Thursday, Via
Campesina and the Latin
American Countryside
Organization
Coordinating Office
supported creation of a
fund, with $0.5 from
each oil barrel exported
by the government of
Hugo Chavez, out of the
cooperation agreements
for over $100.
The same way, they
supported the Venezuelan
initiative to donate the
money to finance
agricultural programs in
the member countries,
and provide greater food
security to them.
The farmer organizations
recalled the lack of
government support for
development of
productive activities
they have been facing
for centuries,
especially since
neoliberal policies were
implemented.
Neoliberalism led Latin
American governments to
dismantle
infrastructures and
favourable policies for
agricultural
exploitation and
promotion of food
imports, said the
source.
These strategies caused
intensification of the
food crisis, global
warming, poverty,
migration and
dislocation of the
farmer economy.
Representatives of the
regional farmers'
organizations demanded
that governments and
state institutions count
on farmers to foster the
rural development
programs designed by the
Petrocaribe Minister
Council.
“We are sure that only
the farmer and
indigenous production
can feed the population
and guarantee the
planet's cooling,” they
pointed out. |
