Honduras Warns of El
Niño Aftermath
The El Niño phenomenon
may worsen food
shortages in Honduras as
crops decline due to
drought, the National
Meteorology Service (SNM)
alerted on Tuesday.
SNM reports the effects
will be more difficult
in November and December
when, contrary to La
Niña, there will be
little rain and a
consequent loss of crops
and food shortage.
The SMN called on the
government and farmers
to adopt measures to
prevent a grain crisis
because of under
production and soaring
demand on the world
market that may hinder
imports.
Water shortage caused by
El Nino in previous
years affected crops and
brought serious distress
to agribusiness.
Southern Honduras is
most vulnerable to
drought and a recent UN
report informed that 15
have people died to the
soaring price of food.
Effects of El Niño may
range from two to seven
years and be reinforced
by global warming. |
