Final Run for
Guatemalan President in
November
Center-left National
Union of Hope candidate
Alvaro Colom is leading
on Monday the
presidential electoral
results in Guatemala,
although he should go to
a second round with
retired Gen. Otto Perez
Molina.
After counting 95
percent of the votes,
the National Unity of
Hope presidential
candidate obtained 28,35
percent, while his rival
of Patriot Party won
23.9 percent.
Professional engineer
Colom's program is based
on the struggle against
poverty, production
increase, and
governability, while
Perez Molina has planned
a strong-hand government
to solve insecurity.
"I believe that the
people is going to elect
social democracy,
because they are tired
of 50 years of
neoliberal governments,
of the strong hand and
the organized crime,"
Colom told press after
the Supreme Electoral
Tribunal announced the
results.
He recalled that in 36
years of internal armed
conflict, 250,000 people
died, mostly massacred
by the army, thus he
thinks that the people
is going to decide
peace, life, and
development in the
second round.
Questioned about
alliances with other
parties, the UNE
candidate asserted that
he has kept good
relations with all the
political organizations,
mainly in Congress, and
considers possible to
reach important
agreements.
Meanwhile, the PP
presidential candidate
accepted the official
results, and said his
organization met its
expectations of being in
the second electoral
