Limón Carnival Proposed
for November
Due to the severe Dengue
situation in Limón, the
Ministerio de Salud
(Health Ministry) said
earlier this month that
it will not give permits
for the annual carnival
in Limón.
The carnival has been
traditionally held in
October and the dates of
the 12th to the 21st
were set for this year.
The organizing committee
is proposing holding the
carnival in November.
Adolfo Blanford,
president of the
organizing committee
said that the Salud
permits may be possible
if the number of cases
of dengue start falling
by November.
However, officials of
the Ministerio de Salud
are clear that carnival
is off for this year as
dengue cases continue to
rise in the Caribbean
port and the ban on the
carnival is not spread
the virus to visitors
from other parts of the
country, which is custom
for the carnivals.
For his part, Eduardo
Barboza, mayor of Limón,
said that state
institutions have been
donating money to the
municipality to finance
garbage pickup.
Limón does not have a
garbage land fill and
has to truck its garbage
to the Central Valley.
Barboza said that the
municipality does not
have the money for the
trucks to move the
garbage, which adds to
the dengue problem.
Barboza added that he is
hoping for the Comisión
Nacional de Emergencias
(CNE) - national
emergency commission -
to help out in the
garbage collection for
the coming eight months,
which would allow the
municipality time to
find a dump site.
Limón generates some 80
tons of garbage daily.
