Mattel Recalls
Contaminated "Barbie"
Accessory Toys
Mattel yesterday began
the recall of 1.429
different accessory
products of the Barbie
dolls from Costa Rican
store shelves. The
products, made in China,
are contaminated with
lead.
The items include
miniature dogs, cats and
dishes that all contain
contaminated lead paint.
Mattel was emphatic that
the Barbie dolls are not
included in the list of
recalled products.
Marical Vargas, of
Mattel Costa Rica,
assured that the recall
is a "voluntary" action
by the company and could
not say how many of the
contaminated products
are already in the hands
of consumers.
The company is asking
consumers to call 259
6815 or visit the
website:
www.mattel.com/safety/laam
to return products for a
refund by producing a
bill or the original
packaging.
Mattel said that during
their investigation that
the recalled products
were produced between
March and August 2007
and that it will be
pulling the complete
line of toys
manufactured between
November 2006 and August
2007.
The recall is worldwide
and is in addition to
the 100.000 Fisher Price
brand toys that were
recalled earlier this
year. None of the Fisher
Price toys recalled ever
made it to Costa Rican
store shelves, Vargas
said.
