missing in collapsed Colombian
mine
Rescuers resumed their search
Sunday for 10 people who
remained missing after
Saturday's gold mine collapse in
Cauca province, said the mayor
of the town where the mine is
located.
Rescue teams, which include
civil defense forces and police,
had recovered 22 bodies and
rescued 24 injured workers from
the mine in Suarez town by
Saturday evening, when rescue
efforts were suspended for
security reasons.
The ground remains unstable in
the area, where several hundred
residents worked as gold miners.
Many miners managed to escape
when they realized the mountain
was collapsing, according to
local media.
Mayor Javier Ambuila had
previously ordered the closure
of the mine after experts from
the government-run Colombian
Geology and Mining Agency warned
that the land in the area was
dangerously unstable. But
residents defied his order and
returned to the mine Friday.
Suarez is located in a rural
area close to the Salvajina
power station and gold is a
cottage industry for the town.
