Argentine, Spanish ministers meet on UN reform
Argentina's Deputy Foreign Minister Roberto
Garcia Moritan and his visiting Spanish
counterpart Bernardino Leon Gross met Tuesday to
discuss reforming the UN.
Their talks focused on the planned new UN
council on human rights, currently the
responsibility of the UN General Assembly. which
would cover human rights in greater depth.
Moritan and Gross also discussed another
proposed body, the Peace Consolidation
Commission, which would work on rehabilitating
nations affected by armed conflicts.
The talks are within the framework of a 2006
strategic association agreement signed by
Argentine President Nestor Kirchner and Spanish
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana and
his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos
are pushing for an international seminar, the
Alliance of Civilizations, which aims to deepen
political, social and education links between
Muslim nations and the West.
Taiana met Spain's secretary of state for Ibero-American
affairs, Trinidad Jimenez in Buenos Aires last
week.
