New Minister Wanted in Guatemala
Guatemala´s President Oscar
Berger and his cabinet seek on
Tuesday a new Interior Minister,
as part of a reshuffle and purge
that ministry, which has been
strongly questioned by the
security crisis gripping the
country.
One of the most mentioned
candidates is Adela de
Torrebiarte, member of the
Advising Security Council, who
claims to have a work plan and
adequate team to implement the
necessary transformations in
that ministry.
De Torrebiarte led in the 90s a
civil organization called
"Madres Angustiadas" that
demanded authorities to end
kidnappings, above all in young
people and adolescents.
According to Vice President
Eduardo Stein, the executive has
five aspirants to find a
successor for Carlos Vielman,
who ratified his resignation
despite wide support received on
Monday during a government´s
cabinet meeting.
Some analysts consider that the
next minister´s great difficulty
will be to determine what the
reliable structures in the
security bodies are, after many
have been infiltrated by
organized crime and corruption.
Insecurity has been one of the
largest problems for the
Guatemalan population in the
last few years, due to
unemployment and the economic
situation.
