Nicaraguan Assembly Ratifies
Joining of ALBA
Nicaragua's National Assembly
ratified on Tuesday the
country's joining of the
Bolivarian Alternative for the
Americas (ALBA) and agreed
cooperation with Venezuela as
part of the pro-integration
project also including Cuba and
Bolivia.
Voting was of 62 deputies in
favor, one against and 10
abstentions.
Today is a special, historic day
for Nicaragua, said Sandinista
deputy Jose Figueroa at the
start of debates in the National
Assembly.
In his opinion, ALBA represents
"a genuine effort, a different
alternative of development for
Latin American peoples who join
their wills and capabilities to
leave poverty behind."
He also explained that ALBA
agreements are based on
friendship, complementariness
and solidarity.
ALBA was born on Dec 14, 2004,
in Havana, with the signing of a
Declaration by presidents Fidel
Castro (Cuba) and Hugo Chavez
(Venezuela).
