Higher Gasoline Prices Around
the Corner
Get ready to loosen the purse
strings a litte more as another
round of gasoline price hikes is
on the way.
The Refinadora Costarricense de
Petróleo (Recope) - the state
monopoly on gasoline products -
has asked, on the heels of a
major price increase, for
another increase in the price of
super gasoline.
This time the increase asked for
is ¢16 colones per litre.
Recope says that the tension in
Iran and the capture of 15
British marines in the Persian
Gulf is driving up the price of
crude oil on world markets from
us$64 to us$76 a barrel, the
highest price in 2007, as being
responsible for the price hike
in Costa Rica.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep) -
the government regulator of
public prices and services - now
has 15 days to decide if it will
approve the increase requested.
Currently, a litre of super
gasoline costs ¢517 colones. If
approved, the new price for a
litre of super gasoline would
jump to ¢533 colones.
