Murderous Year in El Salvador
About 593 homicides have been registered in El Salvador in the two first months of the year, according to figures revealed Sunday by the Legal Medicine Institute, the Attorney s office and the National Civil Police (PNC).

Data from the three entities reported that murders have increased by 322 in January and 271 in February.

In statements to press, institutional spokespeople stated that about 3,928 violent deaths have been reported by late 2006, for a total of 10.8 crimes per day.

Criminal rate in 2006 reached 54.7 percent per 100,000 inhabitants, placing the Central American nation as first in murders, followed by Honduras, Guatemala and Colombia.

According to the PNC, 80 percent of those homicides were perpetrated with firearms in a country where there are 500,000.
