Bush Plans Mean Monoculture, Says Ortega
Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega warned that plans by US President George W. Bush to produce ethanol in Latin America will only bring back monoculture to the region.

"What he came here to say that everybody must grow sugar cane is complete madness because we have to grow beans, corn, sugar cane and vegetables to diversify crops," said Ortega referring to the US president's recent Latin American tour.

In Ortega's opinion, the US "wants us to turn our fields into monocultures of sugar cane and corn to produce ethanol for their vehicles."

The Sandinista leader made his remarks this weekend while attending to a flag handover ceremony with the karate team that will take part in the Central American, Caribbean tournament to be held in Managua this week.
