Brazilian president approves anti-crime plan
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on
Thursday approved a plan to fight crime and
violence, said Minister of Justice Tarso Genro.
The plan, the National Program of Public
Security with Citizenship, will be first
implemented in 11 metropolitan regions that have
the highest crime rates in the country, such as
Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte,
Vitoria, Recife and Maceio, he said.
Under the program, the Federal Police and the
Highway Police will hire more agents, while
several new inmate centers for women and
youngsters will be built.
The program will also set the minimum wage for
state police agents, which is expected to be
1,600 reais (825 U.S. dollars).
However, Genro declined to reveal the estimated
budget necessary for the program, saying he
would negotiate the issue with the Ministry of
Finance, a phase he described as more complex.
Genro expected the program to be launched in the
second half of 2007.
