The Walk To Cartago is
Officially On
Some 1.300 police
officers, 750 emergency
personnel and 110
Tránsito officials were
on duty yesterday to
officially kick off the
annual "romeria"-
pilgrimage - to Cartago,
as hundreds started
their walk early.
Beginning in the early
hours of Saturday
morning, "romeros" began
their walk to the
Basílica de la Virgen de
los Angeles in Cartago,
in one of the more
traditional activities
of Costa Rica.
Many are walking to the
Basílica to ask "La
Negrita" as the Virgen
is often referred to for
a favour, while others
are walking to give La
Negrita thanks.
Some romeros started
their walk early last
week, but it wasn't
until yesterday that the
activity began to pick
up momentum and
authorities began their
"official" campaign to
ensure a safe walk,
where as many as two
million people are
expected to visit the
Basílica between now and
Thursday.
