Managua Free of Illiteracy
Managua will be declared as of Wednesday the first Central American capital free of illiteracy, after a successful two-year literacy campaign with the Cuban method "Yo Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can).

Although the certificate will be granted by the UNESCO, a census carried out by university students proved that the number of illiterate persons in the city does not currently surpass three percent.

Wednesday's public act, led by President Daniel Ortega, will also be to start a new national literacy crusade, whose aim is to totally eradicate a scourge that affect 35 percent of Nicaraguans by 2009.

According to the UNESCO data, the illiteracy rate in Nicaragua in the prior Sandinista government (1979-1990) was reduced from 50 percent to 12.5 percent, but in the last 16 years of neoliberal governments, that figure increased to 35 percent.
