Guatemalan Security
Ideas Decried
Representatives of
Guatemala's civil
society considered the
security proposals
presented by main
presidential hopefuls
are superficial, limited
and having a short-term
approach.
Iduvina Hernandez, from
Security in Democracy (SEDEM),
described it as worrying
that government plans
known so far only
envisage a strengthened
army and police to curb
violence.
She told Prensa Latina
it is striking that most
political parties have
the same limited vision
for securing peace for
the population, without
examining thoroughly the
roots of the problem.
Hernandez said SEDEM
will hold a forum with
presidential candidates
in the coming weeks to
discuss this situation
and demand long-term
projects to solve a
structural phenomenon.
Guatemalans will go to
the polls September 9 to
choose their president,
vice president,
deputies, mayors and
municipal governments.
According to surveys,
security is their main
demand followed by
solution to economic
problems, including
unemployment and the
high cost of living. |
