Fatal Floods Drench Bolivia
The number of victims of the
intense precipitations and
floods that batter the western
region of Bolivia has increased
to 343,000, Civil Defense
sources reported.
Beni in the northeast is the
more affected department with
more than 80,000 people hit by
the climatological phenomenon El
Nino, according to the general
Gonzalo Lora.
The number of fatal victims was
35 in the whole country and the
constant landslides in the roads
make unloading food in the
affected areas difficult.
Defense Minister Walter San
Miguel said the government
prioritized efforts to attend
more affected areas, with the
commitment of sending 130 tons
of provisions.
The Cattlemen Federation
reported that at least 11,000
cattle have drowned and around a
million more are headed for the
same fate.
Naval servicemen work in boats
to give assistance to those who
live around the rivers, media
reports.
Bolivian President Evo Morales
went yesterday to areas of the
Cochabamba central department,
where 1,200 families that lost
their houses and crops from the
floods.
