Peruvian president
announces reconstruction
plan for quake-hit south
Peruvian President Alan
Garcia announced Tuesday
that a reconstruction
plan would be launched
in the country's
quake-hit southern
region.
The government plans to
employ some 8000 people
to clear the rubble and
reconstruct three of the
worst-hit cities, namely
Pisco, Ica and Chincha,
Garcia said when touring
the region.
"Bread earners" and
those who suffered great
losses during the
earthquake will have
better chances to be
employed, and workers
will receive their
weekly wages in advance,
the president said.
A 7.9-magnitude
earthquake hit southern
Peru on Aug. 15 and the
major quake was followed
by more than 500
after-shocks.
According to the latest
figures from the
Peruvian government, the
quake killed 550 people,
injured 1600 and left
tens of thousands
homeless.
