Nicaragua Recalls
Signing Peace Accords
Nicaragua President
Daniel Ortega asserted
Tuesday in Managua that
only the unity of
Central American, Latin
American and Caribbean
peoples will allow peace
to be consolidated on
the subcontinent.
"It is by being united
that we will eradicate
poverty. It is by being
united that we will
obtain education, health
and culture for our
peoples. It is by being
united that we will
reach a true and long
lasting peace," the
Sandinista leader
stated.
Ortega spoke at an
academic forum to
celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the
signing in the
Guatemalan city of
Esquipulas, the peace
accords that ended armed
conflicts in Central
America.
Costa Rica President
Oscar Arias, Guatemalan
former President Vinicio
Cerezo, who played a
leading role in that
event, also attended
this forum, organized by
Nicaraguan Cardinal
Miguel Obando.
The other two signers of
the document: Honduras
former President Jose
Azcona Hoyos and
Salvadorian Jose
Napoleon Duarte have
since passed away.
Ortega spoke in favor of
the establishment of
fair trade relations
among the peoples of the
area.
