Morning Gunfight in
Zapote
Fifteen bullets were
exchanged in a gunfight
between two men on
motorcycles yesterday
some 200 metres south of
the Zapote rotonda,
leaving one dead and
another critically
wounded.
The incident occurred
shortly before 11:00am
when one of the men
opened fire on the other
following a heated
argument as they more
slowly short of the
rotonda, witnesses told
police.
Members of the Fuerza
Pública (police) and the
Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ)
identified the dead man
as 25 year old Greivin
Antonio Báez Alvarez and
the wounded, 28 year old
César Luis Martínez
Morales. Morales
received six bullet
wounds and is in
hospital hanging on to
his life.
One of the shooters fled
the scene, while the
other laid dead on the
pavement, leaving behind
15 shells.
Delroy Hernández, a
security guard across
the street from the
scene of the incident
told his story. "First
there was a heated
discussion between the
men, then one of the
passengers opened fire,
while driving away. The
others fired back in a
hail of bullets but did
not appear to hit anyone
as the bullet did not
reach their
destination", said
Hernández
Authorities believe that
the shooting was a
settling of scores.
Báez had a criminal
history of breaking into
cars and the motorcycle
he was riding did not
have license plates,
police say it fits the
description of a
motorcycle used in
several criminal acts in
the area of Alajuelita,
south of San José.
