Rolando Araya Asks The
Undecided Not To Vote "Si"

Former presidential
candidate for the
Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN), Rolando
Araya, is asking Costa
Ricans who have doubts
on the Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States - to vote
against the trade deal
in the October 7
referendum.
According to Araya,
before making a wrong
decision, the undecided
should think about the
good of the country.
Araya added that the PLN
party - the ruling party
of president Oscar Arias
- is divided on the
issue of the TLC.
On example of that
division is the support
of the TLC by his
brother and mayor of the
Municipalidad de San
José, Johnny Araya, who
along with the majority
of the country's mayors
have expressed their
support for president
Arias and the "Si"
campaign.
Araya said that he has
never seen such a tense
time in the country and
since the civil war of
1948 the country has not
seen such a political
event of major
importance.
"I believe that the role
of Oscar Arias, as
president and Nobel
Peace prize winner,
should be one like the
head of the family. But,
instead of uniting the
nation and to avoid the
confrontations, what he
has done is taken out
the whip and stirred the
waters. This could have
serious effects on the
future of the country",
said Araya.
Araya said that he
believes in the
referendum and is
willing to respect the
decision if the "Si"
wins, believing that the
only the people have the
right to make such an
important decision and
not even the 57
legislators of the
Legislative Assembly.
The former presidential
candidate is very clear
in his message to the
undecided, think clearly
before casting their
vote and if in doubt
don't vote yes simply to
go along with the polls.
